In the latest episode of our podcast, we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Doris Hiam-Galvez, a leading expert in metallurgy and sustainability. Her extensive experience, spanning over 30 years in the industry, has led her to develop groundbreaking methodologies that challenge the status quo in mining and metallurgy. As a change agent and visionary, Dr. Hiam-Galvez brings a fresh perspective on how we can harmonize development with environmental stewardship. The discussion was rich with insights, shedding light on the importance of thinking differently to achieve true sustainability.

Key Highlights from the Discussion:

Empowerment Through Ownership: Dr. Hiam-Galvez emphasized the importance of empowering local communities by involving them in decision-making processes. This approach ensures that sustainability is not just a top-down directive but a collaborative effort that benefits everyone involved.
"It's about taking your region in your hands and empowering those decisions from the inside,"
A Shift from Mining-Centric Mindsets: The current mindset in the industry often blames mining for environmental issues without recognizing the positive strides being made. Dr. Hiam-Galvez advocates for a shift towards an ecosystem solution, where mining is part of a co-created process that includes scientific and societal transformation.

"We need to move away from a mining-centric mindset and look at the bigger picture—it's about creating long-lasting prosperity".

Learning from Nature: Drawing inspiration from the natural world, Dr. Hiam-Galvez encourages us to observe how ecosystems function and apply these principles to our innovations. By mimicking nature's engineering, we can develop solutions that are both effective and sustainable.

Embracing Change and Resilience: Being a change agent is not easy, but Dr. Hiam-Galvez has learned to embrace the challenges that come with it. Her ability to remain joyful and resilient in the face of obstacles has been key to her success.
"People resist change, but it's essential for progress," she stated. "My joy is forevermore, never touched," she said, reflecting on her ability to find peace and motivation in nature.

The Power of Curiosity and Questioning: Dr. Hiam-Galvez encouraged the audience to cultivate insatiable curiosity and challenge the status quo. Ask questions, learn, understand, and with a better understanding, we can be kinder to ourselves and our environment, she advised. This mindset is crucial for driving innovation and making informed decisions that lead to a brighter, more sustainable future.

The conversation with Dr. Doris Hiam-Galvez was a powerful reminder that sustainability is not just a goal—it's a way of thinking, acting, and living. By embracing change, learning from nature, and empowering local communities, we can create a future where development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand. As we continue to explore these themes in our podcast and beyond, we hope to inspire you to think differently and take action towards a sustainable future.
