Welcome to the latest edition of the Material Business Podcast newsletter! In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Megan Gill, an expert in the electricity sector and founder of Repowered Leadership. Megan shared invaluable insights on empowering women in leadership, overcoming the glass ceiling, and addressing the leaky pipeline to senior leadership. Let's dive into the key takeaways from our conversation.
Key Discussion Points:
Understanding the Leaky Pipeline: Megan explained the concept of the leaky pipeline, where high-potential women in the pipeline to senior leadership roles often leave before reaching the top. The pipeline to senior leadership has actually dropped by almost 11% in the last two years, Megan noted, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue.
External and Internal Barriers: Women face both external barriers, such as gender bias and lack of support, and internal barriers like imposter syndrome. Megan emphasized, a lot of women struggle with self-doubt and seeing themselves in leadership roles. Overcoming these barriers requires a combination of organizational support and personal development. She emphasizes the importance of providing tools and resources to help women build confidence. She highlights that
"Evidence-based practices can help change negative thought patterns and improve confidence over time" - Megan G.
Sharing her personal journey, Megan discusses the challenges she faced as a new leader, the stress she experienced, and the significance of self-reflection. She credits a positive intelligence program for enhancing her mental clarity and focus, which helped her manage stress and prioritize effectively. Monica and Megan also stress the importance of focusing on what one can control and adapting one's thinking to handle situations better, underscoring the value of self-awareness and mental resilience in leadership.
The Importance of Boundaries: Setting healthy boundaries is crucial for personal well-being and professional success. Megan advised,
"Communicate your boundaries clearly and effectively. It's about helping everyone understand expectations and reducing frustration."
Clear boundaries allow leaders to focus on what truly matters and avoid burnout.
Self-Reflection and Alignment: Taking time for self-reflection helps ensure alignment with personal values and goals. Monica shared, understanding that if I dedicate this time to you right now, I'm giving you my undistracted attention because this time will never happen again. This practice enhances well-being and productivity, while keeping everyone's expectations clear.
Investing in Female Talent: Organizations must invest in the development of high-potential women. Megan urged leaders to
Identify your top female talent and invest in their development. It'll pay off in spades in innovation, productivity, and culture.- Megan G.
Supporting women's advancement benefits the entire organization.
Community and Support: Building a supportive community is essential for personal and professional growth. Monica reminded listeners, you're not alone. Reach out if you're in that position and need advice or resources. A strong network can provide the encouragement and resources needed to succeed.
Empowering women in leadership and addressing the leaky pipeline to senior leadership requires a multifaceted approach. By understanding the barriers, setting clear boundaries, investing in female talent, and building supportive communities, we can create a more inclusive and equitable workplace.
